Olfaction and gustation have been called the chemical senses since they are stimulated by chemicals. The scientists that study these senses even attend "chemical senses meetings" to discuss their work! Some people also like to include some types of pain in the category of chemical senses, but we will not do that here. Although the details of how chemicals can cause receptor potentials to occur in olfaction and gustation may have some similarities, we will not get into that here. Instead, I want you to plunge right in to each sense separately; they are different enough to merit separate descriptions. Just keep in mind that these two senses can actually work together. When you have a cold so that you cannot smell anything, food just doesn't taste as good. That's because your sense of smell enhances your sense of taste. |
