Distance students will find all of the lab information needed from this page. General information about each lab, as well as the lab set-up information for each lab, will be posted here. All specific submission forms will be available only through our BlackBoard website. All labs will be submitted through submission forms and supplemental assignments. Only submit the lab if you are enrolled in the distance course. Thank you. Here's what you should do each week:
Keep in mind that biology labs are typically called "wet labs," referring to the fact that the exercises carried out in lab are not just on pen & paper but are with real biological materials and can be a little messy. We are not going to be doing any dangerous wet labs, nor are we going to be doing lots of dissections or gruesome labs... that certainly wouldn't be a good idea as you carry out these labs in an unsupervised setting! However, I did design this course for you to do real biology wet labs in your own home; you will not just be pointing and clicking on the computer. It will be important for you to pick a day and time each week that will be good for you to do your lab. You will need to then find out what materials you need to have each week so that you can get them prior to your lab night. I have heard other professors tell me that when they give "take-home" labs to their students, the students end up completing the lab as a family and get a lot more out of it than doing it on their own-- if this scenario would work for you, I encourage you to involve your friends or family in performing the labs. A couple of the labs require that you do some set-up or purchasing somewhere other than the grocery store in the days prior to the lab. This is explained a little more in the Purchases & Preparation web page. Also, please be sure to take a look at the "needed materials" web page for the next week's lab as soon as you finish the current lab. |
