Purchases & Preparation
Home Up

You will be expected to buy and prepare materials for lab throughout the semester.   These materials are mainly inexpensive to purchase and do not take excessive time to prepare.  I also expect that you have some standard household items available to you, like measuring cups and some plastic containers (like deli containers or Tupperware).

There are a few items, however, that will take some extra time for you.  These exceptions are highlighted throughout the video tape, to ensure that you are aware of them.  I have also listed a few items that stand out in my mind as items you will need to specifically consider buying/preparing this semester.

bulletToy Microscope-- the most expensive item that you will need to buy by a long shot.   These typically run $20 - $25 for a good one.  Please watch the video tape about the microscope lab before buying your microscope!  The video will help you figure out which microscope to buy!
bulletWeight Watcher's Scale-- these can typically be found in the aisle of your supermarket where the utensils are sold.  It needs to display weight in grams.  These run approximately $5.
bulletThe passive transport lab requires about 4 days of preparation for one of the experiments (the osmosis experiment with the eggs).  It also requires some solution preparation that could take a few minutes.  Be sure to leave yourself enough time for the preparation the week of the passive transport lab!
bulletThere are a few organisms that you may have to try to pick up at a local pet store or bait shop.  They will be identified to you later in the semester, but you should expect to have to make that extra trip to a store for an occasional item (infrequently).
