Some General Guidelines:

·         You will prepare an informational sheet about one of the above topics.

·         The fact sheet should be written using language that would be understood by the general public.  For example, what you might see in a doctor’s office.

·         I have included a sample to give you an idea of what I am looking for (see link at upper left).  I chose a fake disorder to write about –DHMO Poisoning.

Details (what to include; 10pts each--I look for each of these when I am grading):

·         Describe the disease – what are the symptoms?  Age of onset?  Etc.

·         Symptoms of the disease/disorder

·         How is diagnosis made?  What is the current treatment?

·         A  description of the genetic basis of the disease from what you have learned in class and through readings.  Use other sources (books, the internet) to elaborate.

·         Is this a sex linked disease?

·          Is this a dominant or recessive disease?

·          Is the disease due to a chromosomal aberration?

·         Is the disease due to a mutation in a particular gene?

·        Include figures/artwork/graphics

·        References – at least three sources of information cited.  If use websites, please include author, date and web address.

·        The fact sheet should be organized

·        The fact sheet be written using proper English grammar and spelling

·        The fact sheet should be no longer than 1 page

·        Be creative!

More DETAILS:

1.        The information sheet should be no more than 1 pages in length.  Please keep it within this limit.

2.       The font size should be 10 or 12 pt.

3.       The margins should be no smaller than 1/2 inch around, and no larger than 1 inch around.

5.    The format can be either a single page information sheet, or a bi or tri-fold pamphlet.

6.    Make copies of your information sheet/pamphlet for all of your classmates prior to the presentations on Dec 10th.

PRESENTATION:

On Monday December, 10th you will make a 5 minute presentation on your topic in class.  Your presentation can include any type of visual aid that you wish to use -- chalkboard, overheads, computer, handouts, etc.  Please keep the presentation to 4 minutes – practice it ahead of time to be sure you will not go over (or under) your time!  Any presentations that are not completed on Monday will be on Wednesday, but please be prepared for the Monday date.  The written part of the assignment is due on Monday, regardless of when you present your material to the class.
