BIOL151: Introduction to Biotechnology
Assignment 3: The Human Genome Project
Fall 2007 due
9/26/07
1. Check out the
websites on the Human genome Project, listed on the Biotech Links page and on the
front page of your packet of articles. The sites have much useful information about
the HGP, and about how sequencing of genes is actually done.
Include one interesting fact you found:
2. What is a genome? How large is the human genome? How any genes are
in the human genome?
3. What is the Human Genome Project?
4. What groups and individuals were involved with the joint announcement in the
summer of 2000 about the completion of the sequence of the human genome? What was
the source of tension between the two groups?
5. How did the methods of the two competing groups differ?
6. Why is sequencing the genome only the first step towards understanding our
genes?
7. How do you feel about patenting genes?
8. What are some of the benefits/applications of sequencing the human genome? What about
problems?
9. Who should have access to genetic information about
individuals? Insurance companies? The government? Your employer? Your
relatives?
10. What point did you find most interesting in either the
Dog Genome story or the story about chimp versus human DNA?
