Online Resources for BioTeach Participants [as listed in your workshop binder, under " Background Information for BioTeach Labs"]
How to get sequence information From the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Institute of Health (NIH). The NCBI maintains a portal to databases of all known DNA sequences, “GeneBank.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ From Genecards, a hyperlinked database correlating DNA and protein sequence information from human genes to literature about diseases.http://www.genecards.org/index.shtml
How to process sequence information Generate a restriction map from your sequence using NEBcutter (from New England Biolabs, a manufacturer of restriction enzymes) a free online computer program that determines the sites for all known restriction enzymes in a given DNA sequence. NEB cutter will also give you the translation of your sequence. http://tools.neb.com/NEBcutter/index.php3 Draw a restricion map for your plasmid using pDRAW, a free downloadable progam. http://medlem.spray.se/acaclone/download/pDRAW32setup.zip
Additional Resources An excellent website for all things DNA is Dolan DNA Learning Center at Cold Spring Harbor. http://www.dnalc.org (Pioneers in DNA Science Education; Authors of the Handbook used for the workshop) Website has different features: v DNA Interactive http://www.dnai.org/c/index.html time line of molecular biology discoveries, lesson planning tools and lesson plans to share for teachers v DNA From The Beginning http://www.dnaftb.org/dnaftb/ complete online course in genetics and molecular genetics v Geneboy http://www.dnai.org/geneboy/index.html a neat tool and program for sequence analysis v A Library of Biology Animations http://www.dnalc.org/ddnalc/resources/animations.html
Animations from Richard Losick, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor, Harvard University http://www.cfkeep.org/html/snapshot.php?id=41670106 DNA replication http://www.cfkeep.org/uploads/dna_replication.mov Translation http://www.cfkeep.org/uploads/translation.mov Free Science Education DVDs for the general public from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). http://catalog.hhmi.org/index.jsp
