Spring 2008 BIOL 140 PROJECT:

Information Sheet on a disease or disorder related to biochemistry

This project can be done as a group project or can be handed in as an individual project.  I encourage you to work in groups.  There is a 3 point bonus for working in a group of two, five point bonus for working in a group of 3-5 (no more than 5 people in a single group).  If you are someone who prefers to work alone,  I was like that as a student, and you can still do very well on this.  This project is meant as a learning experience, and if you follow directions, you will do well--it really can only help your grade.

I would prefer if each individual or group chose a different topic, however I will allow two groups to do the same project if requested.  Let me know when you have chosen a topic--I will have a sign-up sheet with me in class

2. Written Informational Sheet

·        You will prepare an informational sheet about one of the above topics.

·        The fact sheet should be written using language that would be understood by the general public.  For example, what you might see in a doctor’s office.

·        Details (what to include; 10pts each--I look for each of these when I am grading):

·        Description of and cause of the disease/.disorder (how it is related to biochemistry?)

·        Symptoms of the disease/disorder

·        Treatment of the disease/disorder

·        Include figures/artwork/graphics

·        References – at least three sources of information cited.  If use websites, please include author, date and web address.

·        The fact sheet should be organized

·        The fact sheet be written using proper English grammar and spelling

·        The fact sheet should be no longer than 1 page

·        Be creative!

·        Include your name(s) on the information sheet

3.   Copy your completed info sheet for your classmates.  There are 10 students in section D02 (T/Tr class) and 16 students in section D01 (MWF class).  I will hand out all completed fact sheets in class for everyone to view.   There will be bonus questions on the final exam related to these information sheets.

The Final Date to submit the above project is

Tuesday  April 29th for section D02

Wednesday April 30th  for section D01

A ten (10) point penalty per day will be imposed past the above date.  It will not be accepted after May 2nd
