INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An introductory course designed to acquaint the
student with the working knowledge of the concepts used by sociologists and with the well
established generalizations in the field. Topics to be studied, include
socialization, culture, population, group processes, social stratification and
social change. The major theoretical perspectives are introduced and applied to each
chapter in the textbook. Participants acquire the necessary skills of applying
theory to everyday life. Students are encouraged and challenged to make paradigm shifts by
using C.W. Mill's concept of "Sociological Imagination" to accomplish this
goal.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of this course are for students to:
* examine social life beyond their own experiences
* understand the relationship between Sociology and
everyday life
* analyze how the "Sociological
Imagination" extends beyond national borders
* encourage critical thinking about society and how
media is used for gathering information about the world
* understand the connection between sociological and
social policy issues in today's society
