SOCL 200  SOCIAL PROBLEMS

The course is taught  traditionally, web assisted and as a distance course.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course applies the principles and concepts of sociology to an understanding of contemporary social problems such as poverty, minority status, crime, alcohol, drug addiction, etc. Emphasis will be placed on the connection between personal experience and the larger social, political, and economic institutions of society.

PREREQUISITE:       SOCL-100  AND SOCL-110

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 

By the end of the semester the expectations are that the student will have the following competencies:

  1. Apply the three major sociological approaches, Structural Functionalism, Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interactionalism to social problems.
  2. Examine social problems from a global perspective.
  3. Explore the media’s role in defining, exacerbating and ameliorating social problems.
  4. Be exposed to current and emerging social issues, such as genetic cloning, abortion rights and elder affairs.
  5. Assess their own attitudes, beliefs, knowledge or behavior regarding aspects of various social problems.
  6. Understand the application of social research to social problems.
  7. Develop critical thinking skills to apply the information discussed throughout the course.
