COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

Thanatology, the study of death, will be examined and studied from a sociological, psychological, philosophical, legal and moral perspective.  Issues will be applied to a society in which values and traditions are constantly changing.   The course will address the facts confronting death in a rational way.   Emphasis will be on current trends in the field regarding right to die with dignity, near death experiences and reincarnation.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course the expectations are that the student will:

 

* understand  the part fear and anxiety plays in societal attitudes toward death and dying

*  distinguish between death as an event and dying as a process

*  identify the stages of dying and normal reactions to the stages

* be acquainted with the major legal implications surrounding the death system.
