Absolute Value:

The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on a number line. To find the absolute value of a number, follow the next 2 steps:

bullet If the number is negative, change it to positive.
bullet If the number is positive or zero, leave it alone.

Example:
Find the absolute value of the following numbers:

Question Absolute Value Reason
|5| = 5 Positive number.     Leave it alone.
|-3| = 3 Negative number.   Change it to positive.
|-8| = 8 Negative number.   Change it to positive.
|50| = 50 Positive number.     Leave it alone.
|0| = 0 The distance between 0 and 0 is 0.
