Opposite

Opposite of a number:

The opposite of x is represented by -x. Remember that -x does not mean negative number. It depends on the value of x. If x is positive then -x is negative. If x is negative then -x is positive. In other words: to find the opposite of a number, simply change the sign of that number.

Example:
Find the opposite to the following questions:

Question	Opposite	Reason
x = 4	-x = -(4) = -4	An odd number of minus signs will simplify to a minus sign
x = -7	-x = -(-7) = 7	An even number of minus signs will simplify to a plus sign.
x = 8	-x = -(8) = -8	An odd number of minus signs will simplify to a minus sign
x = 0	-x = -(0) = 0	-0 is the same as +0 which is the same as 0.
