Topics include a review of simplification of algebraic expressions, solving linear equations and inequalities, polynomials and operations with polynomials, factoring, solving quadratic equations by factoring, rational expressions, solving inequalities, negative exponents, radicals, rational exponents, quadratic formula, rectangular coordinate system, graphing linear and quadratic equations, solving systems of linear equations, linear inequalities and systems of linear inequalities. Homework: The homework assignments are the marginal problems in each chapter and the problems at the end of each section. Answers are given in the textbook. I strongly recommend that you attempt as many as possible of these problems. Course Policy: Students are expected to follow the time line for each quiz/exam. If a student misses the deadline for a quiz/exam, the score for that quiz/exam will be a zero. a student can take any quiz/exam before the deadline date. The date written on top of each quiz is the last day that a student can take the quiz/exam. A student who misses more than 3 exams will be dropped from the course. Testing and grading: Eleven quizzes will be given in this course . These quizzes will count only 65% of your grade. You are allowed to take each quiz only one time. The other 35% of the grade will be based on the remaining three module exams which will be given on the web. Additional Help: Several second year students may be available for help in the summer. They will be located in the math center in building 17 room 425. The center is open Mon-Thur from 8:00am to 2:30pm. You do not an appointment for the tutors. If you are having a problem with a topic, I highly recommend that you see a tutor. There service is free to all of our students. Please call the Math Center (Building 17 room 425) at STCC before you make the trip.
